Best Chinese-language films of the 90s

As my contribution to the end-of-decade "make a list" phenomenon, the following list of what I consider (for the moment, as all such lists are provisional at best) the be the best Chinese-language films of the 90s appeared in the "Best of the 90s" issue of Cinemascope, vol. 2 (Winter, 1999), along with a brief review of In the Heat of the Sun. Less pompously, one should perhaps just call this a list of Chinese language film masterpieces of the 90s, and avoid the whole canon-building trap.
